Cuneyt Cakir called up for World Cup duty

Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir has been selected to officiate matches in this years 2018 World Cup set to take place in Russia.

Cuneyt Cakir, Turkey’s most famous referee as of recent times, has been invited to officiate 2018 FIFA World Cup matches in Russia, according to FIFA.

Along side Cakir will be his assistants Bahattin Duran and Tarik Ongun, who are also from Turkey.

Cuneyt Cakir is one of 36 referees that have been invited to Russia while Duran and Ongun are among the 63 assistant referees that will be taking part of the World Cup.

Interestingly, there were no British referees selected and thus there will be no British referees at the World Cup this summer for the first time since 1938. FIFA has chosen 36 officials for the tournament but none from England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland.
