“Cuneyt is the best ref in Europe”

Cuneyt Cakir has a reputation of constantly making mistakes in the Super Lig however he has been performing quite well in Europe.

Well-known Cuneyt Cakir made headlines in Spain after the first-leg of Barcelona’s knockout round match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night.

In a match that was expected to be full of drama, it didn’t disappoint and neither did Cakir. The former insurance broker made his authority known by keeping the players on the pitch in check. Luis Suarez, who has a reputation for diving, wasn’t spared after the Uruguayan fell easily to the ground in Chelsea’s penalty box in the 76th minute. Cakir immediately reached for a yellow card and had strong words for Suarez, who protested his innocence.

The Turkish referee did not disrupt the flow of the game and received praise by Spanish press. Websites such as AS Newspaper (es), Mundo Deprotivo and Sport Newspaper (es) wrote articles praising the referee for his excellent performance.

Former Spanish referee, who is a well-respected name in Spain, posted a tweet stating, “Cuneyt Cakir, in my opinion, the best referee in Europe.”
