Cuneyt Cakir to referee Madrid-Bayern clash

Turkey’s most famous referee Cuneyt Cakir will officiate the clash of giants between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich on Tuesday as they meet in the second-leg of the Champions League semi-final in Madrid.

UEFA have designated Turkish referee Cüneyt Çakir as the match official for the return leg of the Champions League semi-final between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the Bernabéu on Tuesday night.

Çakir, 41, has been handed several high-profile games in recent seasons and has been a UEFA Elite official since 2010.

The Turk is a fixture in the latter phases of the continental competition and this season has already been in charge of a Real Madrid match; in Turin when Los Blancos won 3-0 against Juventus. In the group stage he officiated at Tottenham-Real Madrid, and last season he was also in charge of the return semifinal match between Real and Atletico Madrid at the Estadio Vicente Calderon.

He also took charge of the 2014-15 Champions League final between Barcelona and Juventus, which the Liga side won 3-1, and last season’s Madrid derby semi-final in the Calderón.

In 2017-18 he has refereed Madrid once, the 3-0 victory over Juventus in Turin in the first leg of the quarterfinals, and took charge of Bayern’s 3-1 home victory over PSG in the group stages. He was also in the middle when Spurs beat Zinedine Zidane’s side 3-1 at Wembley at the same phase of the tournament.
