Gomis: I’ve been fighting racism since childhood

French striker Bafetimbi Gomis gave an interview to Socrates magazine about his experience with racism.

Galatasaray’s hit-man Bafetimbi Gomis has opened up during an interview with the magazine Socrates and talked about a variety of subjects including the racism he has faced in his personal life and on the pitch.

The Senegal-born French goalscorer said he has been fighting racism since his childhood.

“Unfortunately from childhood I was subjected to racial insults because of the colour of my skin. I’ve had a lot of bad experiences. But these experiences have made me stronger. I’ve worked more to break the prejudices of people and to prove wrong the stereotypical racist ideas.” said Gomis.

This has been an issue in French football for a long time, for black and immigrant players. But we manage to prove that we are among the best players in France and we earn very good money. We are among the best.” he continued.

“Racism creates misinformation, prejudice and fear but it is possible to break it down and get rid of it.”, explained the 32-year-old.

“I believe that everyone can live in a way that respects each other, destroys barriers such as race or sex. French, Turkish, African, black or white, we should live together with respect and love. You don’t have to be afraid of others. It makes no sense to be.” he added as he explained further.
