Fener’s Comolli: Don’t come for the money

Fenerbahce’s sporting director Damien Comolli warned money-hungry players to stay away.

Damien Comolli has been tasked with bringing in players who will take the Yellow Canaries to the next level but he also had some words of warning for those who think to sign just for the lucrative wages.

Speaking to the club’s magazine, the French scout explained his reason for joining the Turkish club;

“I left Liverpool in 2012 and hadn’t been with any club since. I had a lot of offers but none of them interested me. The project at Fenerbahce did, however, and I accepted the offer.”

“Fenerbahce need to expand and improve its scouting system. That being said, if a player is thinking about coming here just for the money, he shouldn’t come at all.”

Newly elected club president Ali Koc hired the former Liverpool and Arsenal scout last month as he seeks to improve Fenerbahce’s business moves in the transfer market. In recent years, the Turkish club have been mainly signing aging players on high salaries with little in return in terms of performances.

The most recent example is Robin Van Persie. The Dutch star earned €4.9 million annually, before bonuses, and spent a big chunk of his time with the club on the sidelines due to injuries. He scored 40 goals in 91 matches, a low return for a striker of his calibre.
