Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel retires

The veteran goalkeeper has called time on his professional playing career.

Fenerbahce’s long time goalkeeper, Volkan Demirel, has announced his retirement from professional football on Monday.

According to the statement released by the player and Fenerbahce on Monday, Demirel will remain with the club and become a part of the coaching staff.

The veteran goalkeeper joined Fenerbahce from Kartalspor in 2002 and remained with the Istanbul club for 17 years.

The club’s former captain, known for his unpredictable and eccentric behaviour on the pitch, appeared in 515 matches for Fenerbahce.

During his time with the club, Demirel has won five Super Lig titles, 2 Turkish Cups and 3 Turkish Super Cups.
