Sporting director Damien Comolli leaves Fener

The Frenchman has resigned from his post as the club’s sporting director after falling out with the club’s president Ali Koc.

Fenerbahce have officially cut ties with Damien Comolli who acted as the club’s sporting director since June 2018.

The former football scout has resigned as of today, according to the statement released by the club on their official website. The club thanked Comolli for his services and wished him success in his future endavours.

The 47-year-old was appointed to the role by Fenerbahce president Ali Koc in June 2018, shortly after the presidential elections of the club.

Comolli, whose three-year contract was set to expire in 2021, has been employed by some of Europe’s biggest football clubs including AS Monaco, Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham.

In his role as sporting director at Fenerbahce, the Frenchman was tasked with recruiting players for the club by using his vast connections in the football world.

According to sources close to Fenerbahce, however, Comolli was forced to resign after Koc’s growing concern with the low caliber players he has brought to the Istanbul club.

Comolli was responsible for the transfers of players such as Andre Ayew, Benzia, Diego Reyes, Islam Slimani, Michael Frey, Adil Rami and Zanka — all who have come and gone after short and disappointing spells with the club. Although Rami is still a Fenerbahce player, he too, is reported to be on his way out.

His most recent transfer has been the arrival of defender Simon Falette from Bundesliga outfit Frankfurt, for which he was heavily criticized by pundits and the club’s fans.

In an unprecedented move to respond to the negative criticism, Comolli opened a Twitter account on January 9 and released a series of Tweets in order to explain and justify his reasoning for the transfer of Falette as well as to deny the allegations made against him regarding a commercial partnership with Rogon Football Agency – Simon Falette’s representatives who facilitated the transfer to Fenerbahce.
