Besiktas raises the bar for Turkish football

The Black Eagles were knocked out of the Champions League last night however they have been the most successful Turkish football club in Europe this season.

Besiktas were eliminated by Bayern Munich last night however they go out with their heads held high as they have gone further than any other Turkish team this season.

The club not only set a record for Turkish football in the Champions League this campaign, they received a signifcant amount of money from their participation in the prestigious tournament.

In addition to the €12.7 million they received for playing in the Champions League, they received €6 million for their 4 wins and another €1 million for their two draws in the group stages.

For advancing to the round of 16 knockout phase, they received another €6 million.

It is estimated the club will receive approximately €44 million in total, from the participation prize money and TV revenue together.

The second Turkish team to receive a large chunk of money for playing in Europe this season is Istanbul Basaksehir. The club were given about €15 million.

The government-backed club earned €3 million for playing in the qualification rounds of the Champions League before being eliminated and being placed in the group stages of the Europa League, from which they earned close to €1.5 million.

Konyaspor was third with their European prize money earnings as they took in €11 million for their participation in the Europa League group stages.

Fenerbahce and Galatasaray received the least amount this season after failing to get past the qualification stages of the Europa League tournament. Fenerbahce earned a total of €480,000 while Galatasaray earned a meager €225,000.
