Super Lig’s best 11 announced

The annual awards ceremony recognizing football players in Turkey for their achievements took place in Istanbul last night.

The Super Lig awards ceremony took place in Istanbul yesterday evening, where the best players of the previous season were recognized for their achievements.

Ex-Galatasaray striker Bafetimbi Gomis, now playing for Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Hilal, received the “Footballer of the Year” award for his incredible debut season with The Lions. He was last season’s top goal scorer and broke the record for the highest scoring foreigner in a single season in Turkey.

The 32-year-old joined the awards ceremony via video conference and spoke of his appreciation for being chosen for the award.

The French forward was also voted “Striker of the Year”.

Galatasray boss Fatih Terim was voted “Coach of the Year” for leading the club to their 21st league title, a record for the club and Turkish football.

Uruguayan international Fernando Muslera received the “Goalkeeper of the Year” award while Besiktas defender Pepe was voted “Defender of the Year”.

Istanbul Basaksehir’s Emre Belozoglu was also recognized for his hard work, picking up the “Midfielder of the year” award.

Portuguese star Ricardo Quaresma won the award for “Goal of the Season”.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Turkish Football Federation president Yildirim Demiroren said the awards ceremony was a testament to “the power of Turkish football and its organizational capabilities.”

“Our country, with its rich football culture, is ready to contribute to the development of European football,” he said, underlining that Turkey deserved to be chosen as the host nation of the 2024 EURO tournament.
