Can Sivasspor win the Turkish Super Lig?

The Central Turkey-based club are on course to win their first-ever domestic league title.

The 2019-2020 season of the Turkish Super Lig has brought about many surprises, however, no one could have predicted the dominance Sivasspor have shown so far this season.

Dubbed the “Liverpool of Turkey” by pundits around the country due to their fearless and attacking style of play, Sivasspor seem to be on course of doing the impossible for a team of their size; be crowned Turkish football champions, and all of this while operating under tight financial constraints.

If they manage this incredible feat, they would become the sixth club in Turkey to ever lift the Turkish Super Lig title.

The traditional powerhouses of Turkish football – Galatasaray, Fenerbahce and Besiktas – have been largely disappointing this season. Despite spending millions on their squad, each club has failed to mount a serious title challenge.

While Galatasaray’s Fatih Terim and Besiktas’ Abdullah Avci have faltered, Sivasspor manager Riza Calimbay has shown that a large transfer budget isn’t the be all and end all to winning.

“Winter Champions”

Sivasspor have managed to not only finish the first half of the season as league leaders — known as Winter Champions in Turkey — but they have done so while defeating the likes of Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor

In fact, bookmakers around the globe have began offering some tempting markets as the title race to be crowned Turkish Super Lig champions enters the most crucial weeks.

After 18 weeks of exciting football action, Sivasspor have been made the favourite by bookmakers to lift the league title.

With current odds of 3.25 (9/4) by one of the world’s largest betting companies, bet365, a rather interesting opportunity is presented.

Second-placed Istanbul Basaksehir are still in the race and their odds of 4.33 are even more tempting, considering they have stars such as former Chelsea striker Demba Ba and ex-Real Madrid star Robinho among their squad.

While Fenerbahce are placed 4th with 34 points, their recent performances have allowed them to remain in the title race.

Their odds of 3.75 (11/4) reflect this and with one of the most in-form strikers of the league – Vedat Muriqi – in their squad, the Yellow Canaries could pull off a surprise come the end of the season.

Or will Trabzonspor, known as The Black Sea Storm, currently in third place right behind Istanbul Basaksehir and just five points behind league leaders Sivasspor, shake things up and power through to their first title since 1984?

Their odds of 7.00 (6/1) are even more tempting and considering their recent impressive performances and key showings of the league’s top scorer, Alexander Sorloth, who is going through the best form of his career, Trabzonspor’s chances of lifting the Super Lig crown look promising.

In either case, the 2019-2020 season of the Super Lig has been one of the most exciting campaigns Turkish football has ever seen and given that the first half of the league finished with a surprise, it wouldn’t take a genius to assume that this season will go down as one of the most memorable in the league’s history.
