Besiktas eliminated from Europa League

The Black Eagles failed to secure themselves a spot in the knockout stages of the Europa League.

Besiktas have been eliminated from the Europa League after losing 1-0 to Swedish giants Malmo on Thursday.

The two clubs played their final group game at Vodafone Park in Istanbul where home fans saw their beloved team lose out on a place in the latter stages of the tournament after going in to the game in second place.

The Swedish club took the lead via Antonsson in the 51st minute.

Besiktas winger Ricardo Quaresma made things worse as he was sent off with a direct red card in the 65th minute, leaving his team with 10 men.

The Black Eagles finished the tournament in 3rd place in their group with 7 points while Malmo overtook them and moved into 2nd with 9 points following their victory.

In the other group games, Turkish minnows Akhisarspor, who have already been eliminated, managed to draw at home against Standard Liege while Fenerbahce, who have already secured their place in the knockout round, lost 1-0 to Spartak Trnava away.
