Galatasaray closing in league leaders

The Lions have reduced the difference between themselves and Istanbul Basaksehir to 6 points after their latest victory on Sunday.

Defending Super Lig champions Galatasaray breezed past rivals Trabzonspor at home on Sunday, February 10 to bring the difference between themselves and leaders Istanbul Basaksehir down to just 6 points in the title race.

The Lions came out of the duel victories with a 3-1 victory thanks to goals from the league’s current top scorer Mbaye Diagne and attacking midfielder Younes Belhanda.

Diagne gave his team the lead by scoring from a penalty kick to make it 1-0 in the 21st minute.

Trabzonspor drew level in the 30th minute through their striker Hugo Rodallega but that was the only goal they could manage during the entire 90 minutes.

Galatasaray found themselves ahead not long after as Belhanda struck twice, first in the 45th minute and then in the 51st to make the score 3-1 and give his team a comfortable lead and ultimately a victory.

The game wasn’t without it’s fair share of controversies, however, as the referee of the night made several questionable calls to which Trabzonspor president Ahmet Agaoglu responded harshly after the game, claiming Trabzonspor were “massacred”.

Basaksehir, who drew against lowly Erzurumspor on Saturday, February 9, are in first place with 45 points while Galatasaray’s latest victory keeps them in second place with 39 points.

Besiktas remain third with 36 points, after defeating Bursaspor 2-0 at home on Saturday February 9.
