Fenerbahce stuns Besiktas with comeback in derby

The Istanbul derby between the two giants didn’t disappoint as it delivered SIX goals in an action packed 90 minutes.

Besiktas thought they had the three points in the bag at half time as they went into the dressing room leading the score 3-0 but Fenerbahce flipped the game on its head as they scored 3 goals in 12 minutes to stun the hosts and salvage a well-deserved draw at Vodafone Park on Monday.

The Black Eagles took the lead in the 10th minute through full-back Gokhan Gonul who scored from close range against his former club to make it 1-0. The Turkish international chose not to celebrate out of respect to his former team.

In the 18th minute, Besiktas were awarded a penalty when Gonul was fouled in the penalty box. Burak Yilmaz stepped up and made no mistake as he sent Volkan Demirel in the opposite direction to make it 2-0.

Just as the first half was coming to an end, Besiktas hit Fenerbahce with a quick counter attack and made it 3-0 thanks to Burak Yilmaz once again.

However, the Yellow Canaries managed to pull off their most stunning comeback this season as they scored 3 goals in 12 minutes after the break.

Midfielder Miha Zajc connected with Nabil Dirar’s cross in the 55th minute to clawback a goal and make it 3-1.

In the 62nd minute, rugged defender Sadik Ciftpinar headed the ball into the back of the net from a Mathieu Valbuena free kick to reduce the difference to 3-2.

By this point, Fenerbahce were full of momentum and succeeded to capitalize on their sudden boost in confidence as they pressed on.

Their persistence paid off when, five minutes later, Fenerbahce left-back Hasan Ali Kaldirim scored the goal of the night with a long range strike that flew past Loris Karius and into the top corner to draw level and make the score 3-3.

The final score leaves Besiktas in third place in the league with 40 points while Fenerbahce remain in 14th with 25 points, barely above the relegation zone.
