Trabzonspor knocked out of Turkish Cup by minnows

The Black Sea Storm have been eliminated from the Turkish Cup at the hands of a second-division team.

Trabzonspor’s poor performance continues in 2019 with their Turkish Cup elimination on Tuesday evening. The Super Lig team were well-beaten by Umraniyespor with a final score of 3-1 which saw them crash out of the tournament.

The first leg finished 0-0 at Trabzonspor’s homeground in Trabzon earlier in February.

Umraniyespor, currently in Turkey’s second division — First Lig — stunned the visitors with a well-deserved 3-1 scoreline.

The small club are in unchartered territory as they are now the first semi-finalist in this season’s Turkish Cup. It has been 16 year since a second-division club has progressed to the semi-finals of the Turkish Cup, with the last team being Caykur Rizespor in 2002/2003.

They will line up against the winner of the tie between Akhisarspor and Kasimpasa, which takes place on Thursday.

Galatsaray are scheduled against Hatayspor on Wednesday evening at Turk Telekom Arena in Istanbul. The first leg of their clash ended in a 2-0 victory for Cim Bom.

Malatyaspor and Goztepe will also battle on Wednesday to determine which team will advance to the semi-finals.

The first leg of the semi-finals will be played on April 2-4 while the return leg is scheduled for April 23-25.

The final of the 2018/2019 Turkish Cup will take place in Sivas on May 16.
