Mbaye Diagne close to breaking league record

The Senegalese striker could become the league’s all-time top foreign goalscorer at the end of the season.

Galatasaray striker Mbaye Diagne is edging closer to breaking the current league record for the all-time top foreign goalscorer of the Turkish Super Lig.

The 27-year-old, who joined from Kasimpasa on the last day of the January transfer window for €10 million, has notched up 28 goals so far and is leading the goal-scoring charts in the league this season.

The current record holder is former Galatasaray striker Bafetimbi Gomis with 29 goals. The Frenchman had a stellar debut season — 29 goals in 33 league appearances — with Galatasaray before being shipped off to Saudi Arabia last summer.

So far, Diagne scored 20 of his 28 goals with Kasimpasa in the first half of the 2018-2019 season, 11 of which have been from penalty kicks. Six of these were while he was playing for Kasimpasa and five have been since he joined Galatasaray.

To date, Diagne has scored against 16 out of the 18 teams in the Super Lig teams, however, he has failed to score against his former club, Kasimpasa, when the two teams clashed.

He needs one more goal to equal Gomis’ record as the league’s top foreign goalscorer and another to set a new record.

With just 5 weeks of Super Lig action left, Diagne could write his name in the record books of Turkish football.
