Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu front runner for Besiktas job

The Black Eagles are heavily linked with currently unemployed Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu.

Besiktas have settled on hiring Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, according to reports in Turkey.

With Senol Gunes, the club’s current coach, set to departure after the club’s final game of the season next weekend, Besiktas will be in need of a new man to lead them into the next season.

Despite being linked with names such as Besiktas assistant manager Guti, Alanyaspor coach Sergen Yalcin and Istanbul Basaksehir coach Abdullah Avci, Besiktas’ board of directors are reported to have chosen Mircea Lucescu as Gunes’ replacement.

Besiktas president Fikret Orman, who was recently re-elected, is known to be an admirer of the Romanian and is keen on finalizing the appointment within days.

According to the reports, the Super Lig club have offered Lucescu a €2 million-a-year contract to take over the reins.

The 73-year-old is currently unemployed after being sacked from the Turkish national team in February.

If Lucescu returns to Besiktas, it will be his second stint with the Black Eagles, having first managed the Turkish club back in 2002 when he guided them to the 2002-2003 Super Lig title.
