VAR to be used in Super Lig in 2018/19

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has finally made its way to the Turkish Super Lig.

Earlier today, the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced their decision to bring the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology to Turkey’s top flight.

According to the announcement published on their website, the VAR system will be utilized in all Super Lig matches in the upcoming season.

VAR made its debut in Turkey last month when it was used during the play-off rounds of the 1.Lig, Turkey’s second division.

Live TV broadcasters will feed the new system with images. The on-field referee will be able to request assistance from VAR and the system will aid the referee in controversial calls. The referee will also be able to go to the sideline and watch the video before deciding on a goal, penalty or direct red card.

This could bring an end to the years of controversial referee decisions that have plagued Turkish football. Either way, it will be interesting to see what effect it will have in the 2018/19 season of the Super Lig.
