Gazisehir Gaziantep promoted to Super Lig

The Southeastern club has been promoted to the Turkish top flight for the first time in its history.

Gazisehir Gaziantep FK have become the third and newest club to be promoted to the Turkish Super Lig after a dramatic promotion play-off final against Hatayspor on Thursday, May 30.

After taking the lead in the 45th minute, Gaziantep FK almost held on for the win but in the 82nd minute Hatayspor struck to equalize and force the game into extra time.

A 1-1 draw during extra time meant the winner was going to be decided via penalties.

Both teams fought hard but it was Gazisehir Gaziantep who came out on top, defeating Hatayspor 5-3 on penalties to reach the Turkish Super Lig for the very first time in their history.

With the team now in uncharted territory and surely to face tough competition in the top flight, they will have to invest heavily in new signings if they wish to avoid going back down next season.

The Gaziantep-based club, a city known for its baklava, joins Denizlispor and Genclerbirligi as the three new clubs which will participate in the 2019-2020 season of the Turkish Super Lig.
