Turkey defender Omer Toprak joins Werder Bremen

The central defender will spend the new season with Werder Bremen after joining them on a season-long loan.

Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen completed the transfer of Turkish international Omer Toprak from Borussia Dortmund, the club announced on Sunday.

The 30-year-old has joined his new club on a season-long loan.

“Omer is a centre-back with pace, who has played at the highest level for many years. We are very glad that he has chosen Werder,” Werder Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt said.

The loan includes an option to buy which Werder Bremen is likely to take advantage of after Toprak’s loan comes to an end.

The Germany-born Turkey international has spent his entire career in his native homeland starting with SC Freiburg before making the switch to Bayer Leverkusen where he played for six seasons.

In July 2017, he joined Bundesliga heavyweights Borussia Dortmund in a €12 million deal but struggled to hold down a regular starting place.
