One in three football fans support Galatasaray

The Lions are the most successful and decorated team in Turkish football history. Will that trend continue?

Anyone familiar with Turkish football has heard the name Galatasaray – the club synonymous with Turkish football.

Given their success on the pitch and dominance in recent years, it should be no surprise that one in three football fans in Turkey are supporters of Galatasaray, according to a recent study by Areda.

While they are the favourite to win the Super Lig every season, they do face stiff competition from other traditional powerhouses such as Fenerbache, Besiktas and Trabzonspor – the four biggest football clubs in Turkey.

The study in question examined various topics such as the club with the highest number of supporters, transfer policies, and performances on the pitch.

The results, taken from polls in 81 cities in Turkey consisting of 7,500 participants over the age of 18, show that one out of every three people is a Galatasaray fan.

The reason? The survey suggests Galatasray’s achievements in Turkish and European competitions for their notoriety. After all, it is the only Turkish club to date to win the UEFA Cup (in 2000 against Arsenal).

Fenerbahce, who were voted as the team with the most successful transfers of the summer with names such as Luiz Gustavo and Max Kruse signing for the Yellow Canaries, came in second in terms of number of supporters while Besiktas and Trabzonspor ranked third and fourth, respectively.

Will Galatasaray continue to live up to the high standard they have set for themselves?

They are currently in 6th place in the Turkish Super Lig – 10 points behind surprise package of the season and league leaders Sivasspor.

Historically, they perform better in the second half of the season and while a 10 point gap might seem like mission impossible,  Turkish coach Fatih Terim has performed miracles with his teams in the past including coming from behind to lift the league title in 2017-2018.

Galatasaray are travelling to Konya where they will face a troubled Konyaspor side on Sunday, January 26th and are expected to pick up an easy three points.  Despite playing away, they are favoured to win with odds of 2.00 (1/1) – a punter’s favourite.

A win against Konyaspor will move Galatsaray up the table and climb towards the title. Fatih Terim’s experience should have no troubles against a Konyaspor side facing the very real threat of relegation as they sit in 14th place.
