Sivasspor enter winter break as leaders

The central Turkey-based club have wrapped up the first half of the 2019/2020 season of the Super Lig by finishing at the top of the table.

The Turkish top flight enters its final round of fixtures for the year this weekend as clubs and players prepare to take a short break before the second half of the league resumes in January.

After 16 rounds of exciting and unpredictable football, Sivasspor have secured themselves firs place with 34 points and they still have one game left to play before the winter break. The club will host Izmir-based Goztepe on Sunday, December 29 while second-placed Istanbul Basaksehir will take on city rivals Kasimpasa in Istanbul on Saturday, December 28.

Should results go their way, Trabzonspor, who are currently in fourth place with 29 points, could potentially move up to second place if they defeat their last opponents for the year, Kayserispor, and Istanbul Basaksehir slip up in their clash.

Sivasspor coach Riza Calimbay has praised his team for their achievement but cautions that the team needs reinforcements if they are to win their first-ever Turkish Super Lig title.

“We have come to where we are now by working hard, not by luck. That makes us extremely happy. But we need reinforcements,” Calimbay said.

“We want to maintain our good performances in the league while also focusing on the [Turkish] cup competition. I am aware that Sivasspor is not a club that can pay huge money to buy players but we need to add three to four new names to our team,” he explained.

The Turkish coach said he has warned his players against being overly aggressive on the pitch in order to maintain focus.

Sivasspor find themselves in an unprecedented situation having never went into the winter break as league leaders previously. The club’s best achievement in the league was back in the 2008/2009 season when they finished in second place.

The second half of the Turkish Super Lig will resume on January 19.
