Trabzonspor return to Europe

The Black Sea Storm have grabbed a spot in the Europa League qualifiers after a four year absence.

After a four year absence from Europe, Trabzonspor are set to make a return in the upcoming season’s Europa League qualifers after their 4-2 win over Kayserispor on Monday ensured they would finish, at least, in fourth place in the Turkish Super Lig.

Though they can still move up to third place if they win the remainder of their games and third-placed Besiktas drop points, Trabzonspor have achieved their objective for the 2018-2019 season; qualify for Europe.

Their victory on Monday evening sees them extend the gap between themselves and fifth-placed Malatyaspor to 12 points with just three games remaining in the season.

The Turkish club’s consistent form throughout the season means they will participate in the 2019-2020 Europa League second qualifying round if they finish fourth.

Speaking to reporters after watching his team win on Monday, coach Unal Karaman said he is happy with the victory and the team is focused on next week’s clash with Konyaspor who are currently in eighth place.

If Trabzonspor manage to defeat Konyaspor, the game following that will be even more important as they still have to play against Besiktas, which means they have a chance of finishing the season in third place and above.

Club president Ahmet Agaoglu says he is optimistic, underlining the club’s form of seven wins and two draw in the last nine weeks.

Formed in 1967, Trabzonspor are the fourth biggest club in Turkey. The Northwestern club was the only club outside of Istanbul to have won the Turkish Super Lig until 2010 when Bursaspor were crowned champions for the first time in their history.

While they have enjoyed success in Turkey, Europe remains a major challenge. Their best achievement in European competitions remains reaching the third leg of the UEFA Cup.
