Turkey outdone by Iceland in 2-1 loss

The Crescent Stars failed to deliver against Iceland in their crucial Euro 2020 qualifier.

Senol Gunes’ men went into their EURO 2020 qualifier against Iceland with high confidence after defeating World Cup winners France 2-0 just days ago but were brought back down to earth after a humbling 2-1 loss at the hands of Iceland in Reykjavik on Tuesday.

Iceland took advantage of their physical and aerial abilities against a physically inferior Turkey and managed to easily find the back of the net with each of their two goals.

The home team’s opening goal came in the 21st minute when Johann Gudmundsson’s cross into the penalty box was received by Ragnar Sigurdsson who headed the ball into the back of the name to make it 1-0.

Sigurdsson, a tall and physically strong defender, doubled Iceland’s lead in the 32nd minute with another header.

After the sudden wake up call, Turkey managed to re-organize itself and struck a goal of its own in the 40th minute thanks to a Dorukhan Tokoz header from a corner kick.

However, it proved nothing more than a consolation goal as the Iceland team held on for the victory.

After 4 qualifiers, Turkey has picked up 9 points in their Group H, which leaves them in second place with 3 wins and 1 loss.
