Genclerbirligi relegated from TSL after 29 years

After losing 3-1 to Kasimpasa today, Genclerbirligi were relegated from the Super Lig.

Genclerbirligi fought hard until the very end but it was not meant to be as they lost to Istanbul side Kasimpasa 3-1 today in their 33rd Turkish Super Lig match of the season.

It was a do or die match for the Ankara based club but much to the dismay of supporters, they never looked like they were going to get anything out of their crucial game today.

In the 35th minute, full-back Ahmet Oguz was shown a second yellow card for a rough foul which meant he was sent off and Genclerbirligi were to be left with 10 men for the rest of the clash.

Just three mintues later, in the 39th minute Kasimpasa went up 1-0 through Mbaye Diagne and then 10 minutes later in the 49th minute, he doubled the score.

Genclerbirligi found the back of the net in the 64th minute after their striker Manu went around the Kasimpasa goalkeeper and kept his composure to slot it into an empty goal to make the score 2-1 and give them a glimmer of hope.

However, in the 89th minute, they gave away a needless penalty to which Kasimpasa’s Mbaye Diagne responded by stepping up and scoring his third goal of the match.

The final whistle brought some Genclerbirligi players to tears as it confirmed their relegation from the Turkish Super Lig this season.

Up until today, the capital club had not been relegated for 29 years.

The club’s manager, Umit Ozat, is expected to resign although nothing has been confirmed at this point.
