Fenerbahce unable to get by Benfica, move to Europa League

The Yellow Canaries couldn’t find a way past Benfica, ending their hope of playing the Champions League this season.

Portuguese powerhouse Benfica ended Fenerbahce’s hopes of qualifying for the group stages of the 2018/2019 Champions League. The second leg of the tie ended 1-1 on Tuesday night, however, Benfica win 2-1 on aggregate due to their 1-0 victory in the first leg.

The away side took the lead in the 26th minute at Ulker Stadium as Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes, 19, found the net with a close range shot.

In the final minutes of the first half, Fenerbahce scored the equalizer. Turkish midfielder Alper Potuk’s header beat Benfica goalkeeper Odisseas Vlachodimos to make it 1-1 in the 45th minute.

Potuk’s goal encouraged the Yellow Canaries but they were unable to add to their score.

The result means Benfica advances to the Play-Off stage of the tournament where they will face Greek club PAOK.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahce will enter the group stages of the 2018/2019 Europa League.
