Van Persie; I didn't enjoy football in Turkey

The Dutch striker made some remarks that won’t sit too well with fans in Turkey.

Feyenoord striker Robin van Persie spoke candidly about his time playing for Fenerbahce during a sit down with a Dutch publication.

The 35-year-old, who said he will retire from professional football at the end of the season, is currently playing for his boyhood club Feyenoord in his native homeland.

Van Persie spent three seasons with the Yellow Canaries during which he was criticized for his subpar performances and spent a significant amount of time on the sidelines with injuries.

His latest comments, however, are sure to raise eyebrows among the Super Lig club’s faithful.

“When I was in Turkey, I didn’t enjoy football. But I didn’t want to retire in those circumstances. That’s why I returned to Feyenoord. It was a great feeling to return to Feyenoord. I wanted to help the team with all the experience I have.”

The former Arsenal striker left Fenerbahce in January 2018 after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract. Shortly after, he signed for Dutch club Feyenoord where is playing out his final days as a professional football player.
