Turkey relegated after loss to Sweden

Turkey relegated after Sweden loss

The Crescent Stars failed to impress, yet again, on Saturday evening against their Swedish counterparts.

Turkey succumbed to a 1-0 loss against Sweden in their UEFA Nations League B Group 2 encounter in Konya on Saturday evening.

Even though they had more ball possession and managed to register 3 shots on target, they were unable to find the back of the net against an equal Swedish side.

With the clock winding down, things took a drastic turn as Turkish midfielder Okay Yokuslu gave away a needless penalty for tripping Sweden’s Marcus Berg in the penalty box.

Andreas Granqvist stepped up and showed no mercy as he put the ball in the back of the net in the 71st minute.

The result leaves Turkey third and last in their League B Group 2 with just 3 points after 4 games, which means the Turkish national team is officially relegated and moves down to League C.

The UEFA Nations League is a new national team competition that replaces friendlies with competitive fixtures, allowing nations to play against equally ranked teams.

The 55 associations were split into four leagues according to their rankings. The group winners in Leagues B, C, and D get promoted, while teams that finish at the bottom of their groups in Leagues A, B, and C are relegated.

Turkey’s final game of 2018 is a friendly against Ukraine in Antalya on November 20.
