Basaksehir widen gap at top as G.Saray falter

The league leaders have opened an eight-point gap between themselves and second-placed Galatasaray.

Istanbul Basaksehir continue to march towards their first-ever league title after another victory over the weekend. The title hopefuls picked up a vital three points when they defeated Malatyaspor 2-0 away on Sunday, March 3.

Their win put pressure on their rivals Galatasaray who played later on Sunday away against Erzurumspor.

The Lions, knowing they have to win if they are to remain in the title race, succumbed to the pressure as they drew 1-1 with the relegation battlers.

Erzurumspor shocked the visitors in the 18th minute when they went 1-0 up thanks to a goal from Rashad Muhammed.

Galatasaray managed to equalize, however, in the 52nd minute via attacking midfielder Younes Belhanda.

The result has brought good news for Basaksehir, which increases the gap between them and second-placed Galatasaray to eight points with just 10 games left in the season.

Besiktas, in third place with 41 points, also failed to impress with their 2-2 away draw against Kayserispor on Saturday March 2.

Fenerbahce, on the other hand, managed to pick up their first Super Lig victory in over a month on the same day, with a crucial 3-2 win against Rizespor.

With their sixth win of the season, the Yellow Canaries were given a little bit of breathing room as they moved two points clear of the relegation zone.

They are now in 14th place with 28 points.

As for Basaksehir, their fate remains in their own hands, knowing that they will be crowned Turkish Super Lig champions if they win 8 of their remaining 10 games.
