Super Lig title race wide open as Basaksehir lose

The league leaders were stunned after a 2-0 loss at home to relegation battlers Goztepe.

The Turkish Super Lig title race is essentially wide open as Istanbul Basaksehir suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at home to lowly Goztepe in Istanbul on Friday evening.

The title hopefuls went down 1-0 in the 7th minute of the first-half when Goztepe striker Cameron Jerome finished off a quick counter-attack by the away side.

Despite controlling the game for majority of the 90 minutes with 74% of the ball possession, it was an unlucky night for Basaksehir as they created plenty of chances but failed to get the result they were hoping for.

Basaksehir saw two of their goals — one by winger Elie and another by midfielder Visca — chalked off after VAR ruled both offside. Replays showed both decisions were extremely tight calls.

As the home-side pressed for the equalizer in the second-half, they became more prone to counter attacks.

In the 84th minute, Basaksehir defender Serdar Tasci lost the ball in the build up of an attack which lead to Goztepe striker Deniz Kadah launching a swift run from the half-way line clear of any opposition players and coolly putting the ball past Basaksehir’s goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

The latest setback could be decisive as Galatasaray travel to Konyaspor on Monday evening where they will be hoping to capitalize on the opportunity.

Basaksehir remain first with 62 points after 30 games while Galatasaray trail close behind in second place with 59 points and a game in hand.
