Participation in the prestigious and lucrative Champions League as well as Europa League has brought Turkish clubs hundreds of millions in the past decade.
It’s no secret that participating in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League is a major source of revenue for football clubs and that includes Turkish sides. According to the latest figures published, Turkish football clubs have collectively earned €434.4 million from participating in Europe’s two competitions in the last ten years.
Galatasaray and Besiktas were the biggest earners with 65% of the reported figure going to their coffers alone while nine other teams earned the remainder of the hefty sum.
Super Lig champions Galatasaray are the highest-earning Turkish club in the Champions League while Besiktas rank as the top Turkish team from the Europa League’s revenues.
In the last 10 years, Fenerbahce earned €52.4 million while Trabzonspor, the country’s fourth biggest club, followed close behind with €30.2 million.
Overall, Galatasaray has made €143 million from UEFA competitions while Besiktas have brought in approximately €142 million.
Galatasaray has earned almost all of their UEFA prize money from the Champions League, playing in the Europa League just once in the last 10 years.
For their participation in the 2009/2010 Europa League, The Lions earned €4.8 million. Since then, they have participated in the Champions League five times, picking up a significant amount of income in prize money.
Having qualified for the group stages of the 2019/2020 season of the Champions League, Cim Bom is expected to earn at least €35 million.
Following closely behind them, Besiktas have earned €76.7 million from their participation in the Champions League, all while under the guidance of former coach Senol Gunes.
During the 2009/2010 season, The Black Eagles pocketed €21 million.
On the other hand, Fenerbahce participated five times in the Europa League in the past 10 years for which they earned €52.4 million. Trabzonspor managed to bring in over €30 million, with the majority of their earnings coming from Champions League participation.
Bursaspor, who were recently relegated to the second division, qualified just once for Europe in the last 10 years. After being crowned Super Lig champions of the 2009/2010 season, the Green Crocodiles participated in the Champions league the following season for which they were awarded €20 million.
The rest of the Turkish clubs making the list include Konyaspor, who participated twice in the Europa League and picked up €18.3 million, Osmanlispor (€10.4 million), Istanbul Basaksehir (€9.4 million) and Akhisarspor (€8.7 million).
