Besiktas edge past Galatasaray in derby

Besiktas-Galatasaray derby

The Black Eagles snatched three vital points at Vodafone Park against their bitter rivals on Sunday evening.

Besiktas finished their weekend on a strong note after defeating city rivals Galatasaray 1-0 at home in their Turkish Super Lig derby on Sunday. But it wouldn’t be a Besiktas-Galatasaray derby without numerous controversies and questionable calls, of which there were several.

The black-and-whites scored the only goal of the game via a penalty kick in the 18th minute of the duel. Midfielder Adem Ljajic, on loan from Italian outfit Torino, stepped up to put give his team the lead.

While there were no other goals, there were several key moments in the game that were debated for hours by sports pundits on national television after the game, including a penalty Galatasaray feel they were denied by referee Cuneyt Cakir.

This was the 344th meeting between the two clubs.

The latest result sees Besiktas and Galatasaray take third and fourth place, respectively, with 24 points each.

Istanbul Basaksehir lead the race for now with 30 points while Kasimpasa trail right behind them in second with 25 points.
