Senol Gunes turned down Turkish national team

The Black Eagles’ head coach revealed he received an offer to take charge of the Turkish national team.

Besiktas boss Senol Gunes revealed to reporters that he turned down a proposal from the Turkish Football Federation to manage Turkey.

The Turkish coach spoke with local reporters this week and explained his reason for rejecting the offer.

“I made a promise to Besiktas and signed a contract. An offer came from the national team. But because I gave my word and signed a deal, I didn’t accept it. All of the coaches that have worked with the national team have been successful, including myself. I think, whether you like it or not, the coaches of the clubs need to respect and support the national team’s coach,” he explained.

Turkey’s current manager, Mircea Lucescu, is under heavy criticism after poor performances have lead to Turkey’s relegation from League B to C in the UEFA Nations League.
