Besiktas sack coach Abdullah Avci

The Black Eagles have dismissed Abdullah Avci from the manager post due to a run of poor performances in recent weeks.

Turkish football giants Besiktas have sacked Abdullah Avci, the club announced on Friday, just two days ahead of their upcoming away Super Lig fixture against Goztepe.

The club thanked Avci for his services and wished him success in the next stage of his career.

“Our Board of Directors have decided to part ways with our manager Abdullah Avci. We thank Mr. Avci for his services and wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors,” the statement released by the club read.

The Turkish coach was appointed in May 2019 as a replacement for their previous coach, Senol Gunes who left to take charge of the Turkish national team.

The final nail in his coffin was Besiktas’ shock exit from the Turkish Cup earlier during the week at the hands of second-division outfit Erzurumspor who managed to defeat Besiktas 3-2 at Vodafone Park.

Prior to joining Besiktas, Avci received praise for his tactical acumen while in charge of city rivals Istanbul Basaksehir where he almost led the club to an unprecedented first-ever domestic league title.

Avci was just one year into this three-year contract with Besiktas before his untimely dismissal on Friday evening.

The current favourite for the vacant manager position at Besiktas is Sergen Yalcin, a former Besiktas player himself.

Yalcin is currently unemployed after being dismissed by Yeni Malatyaspor earlier this month.

Besiktas, under the leadership of Avci, have been performing below exceptions this season.

The club are currently in 7th place with 30 points.
