Caner Erkin facing possible jail time

Besiktas full-back Caner Erkin is in hot water after prosecutors are asking for jail time for verbally abusing referee Mete Kalkavan.

Caner Erkin is in a heap of trouble for verbally abusing the referee during the Besiktas-Basaksehir match which took place back on October 23, 2017.

In the final minutes of the match, referee Mete Kalkavan showed Erkin a yellow card for his inappropriate behavior. This angered the player to the point where he used strong foul language aimed at Kalkavan, who did not take the insults lightly.

Istanbul prosecutors have charged the player with insulting an official responsible for public order and asked for between one and two years of jail time.

The hearings are set to begin in the next few days.

Heated exchanged between players and referees are common in the Turkish Super Lig however Caner Erkin’s incident brought signifcant attention due to it being caught on live television, where viewers were able to make out what was said by reading the player’s lips.

This is the latest bad news for the Black Eagles after its Portuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma was suspended for five matches by the Turkish Football Federation for violent conduct during the Turkish Cup match against Fenerbahce on March 1, 2018.

Besiktas fans, who are anti-establishment, have claimed the club is the victim of a targeted campaign after being crowned Turkish Super Lig champions for two consecutive seasons.
