First defeat in 9 European matches for Besiktas

Besiktas ended their undefeated streak at Vodafone Park tonight after losing 3-1 against German powerhouse Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

The Black Eagles had a good run but it came to an end tonight after they lost 3-1 against Bayern Munich in the Champions League Round of 16 second-leg.

Prior to tonight’s loss, the Turkish Super Lig champions were undefeated in the 9 European matches they played at their new stadium, Vodafone Park. They had drawn 5 and won 4 of those 9 matches however they were simply overpowered tonight by the German side.

In the 18th minute of the match, Thiago Alcantara scored to put Bayern Munich ahead 1-0. Then, just after the whistle to kick off the second-half, Gokhan Gonul fumbled, a what should have been an easy clearance, the ball into his team’s goal to allow Bayern to go 2-0 up.

There was a glimmer of hope to get back into the match, even though the tie was over at this point, when Vagner Love scored the home side’s only goal in the 59th minute. However, Sandro Wanger come on as a substitute in the 68th minute and scored with his chest from close range in the 84th after getting on the end of David Alaba’s cross.

Besiktas may have said goodbye to the Champions League tonight but their fans showed their appreciation as they gave the standing ovation and applauded the players for several minutes once the referee blew his whistle to end the match.
